Dear Coach Craig

Why do the Pittsburgh Steelers have a logo on only one side of their helmets?

Sincerely,

The Plug

Dear Plug:

A very good question  !!

The Steelers have a storied tradition that includes four Super Bowl titles, a large cast of colorful Hall of Famers, and some of the NFL's most distinctive uniforms. We blitzed over to Pittsburgh's official site to see if there was a story to the asymmetrical logo placement.

Based on American Iron and Steel Institute's logo, the Steelers' iconic symbol features three diamond shapes representing the materials used to produce steel (orange for ore, yellow for coal, and blue for steel scrap). The logo made its debut on the team's helmets in 1962 on just one side. The team wanted to make sure they liked the way it looked before committing to placing it on both sides. Who knew linemen could be so fashion conscious?

That year, the squad went on to finish with a franchise best 9-5 record and qualified for the playoffs. To celebrate the occasion, the helmets, which were gold at the time, were painted black. This new color scheme better highlighted the logo, and the Steelers decided to keep it. However, the logo stayed on the right side only, and tradition being what it is, we'd be surprised if they ever change it.

See ya on the field

Around the League

Congrats to the Bucs who recorded their first win this weekend. The power has certainly shifted from one year ago as the top three teams that were perenially at the top are cellar dwellars now.  The Eagles, Jags, and Bucs who were powers of the league for three seasons are struggling.  The Eagles and Jags did not lose a game for three seasons.  The Pack, and the Titans did not win a game last year are now vying for second place.  The Steelers have won the division outright.

The Packers winning this game puts a lot of pressure on us to win next weekend.  The commisioner has the final say on the last game of the season.  We may not even face the Titans this year.  The Steelers really need to win this game to remove any doubt.

The Steelers are the surprise and the talk of the league this year.  We only had two players come back from fourth grade last year, Matt Okay and Jack Bauer.  With the addition of Justin, Julian, Griffin, Wade, and Ben it really has come together so far this year.

The torch is getting ready to be passed to a core group of guys for next year.  The McSweeny's, The Owens,  Stuart, Brendan, Jack M, Jason, Pancake, Plug , Missle, Mikey, Emmet, Owen, Andrew, Fitz, Luke, and D.O.  They will have a lot to get ready for.  I amazed at the level that these guys can play now.  We are the only team that has that type of depth.

The requests to play on the Steelers have been pouring into the commish's office prompting him to wonder what the heck is going on in Steel town.  I just tell him its the tailgate.

Its been a great season lets finish it the right way.

BEAUTIFUL DAY - UGLY WIN

Three cheers for the Defense - Steelers win 1-0

The Eagles tried their best today but were no match for the defense.  The Eagles really tried to work us this game using clock management.  They needed to keep us off the field.  We had three turnovers today which nearly killed us.  Typically, you lose games like that.  We need to get our guys to carry the ball a little tighter to the body.  But, we find a way to win.  Thats the best benchmark of a good team.

Mike G redeemed himself from an earlier turnover by scoring on a play that I personally thought he was dead on.  He is just very quick and can flat out run.  It seemed like every time they got close he just accelerated just a bit to get away.  He also played well on defense.

Owen Coady and Plug Davis anchored the middle.  Plug made two terrific plays in a row on defense.  Getting by the center and squishing the offense minded Eagles.  I also did see the Fitz getting involved in defense, nice job Fitz  !!

The big guys on defense made some nice plays too.  After removing his gloves Brendan came back to play.  Ben Kahan at middle linebacker made a touchdown saving play by tipping a pass.  Jack Bauer put the game away with an interception.  Julian also played huge on defense.  When the Eagles tried to run around the corner Stuart was there, as usual, to make the stop.

We are now 5-0 going into the last week of regulation.  There was a bit of an upset this week as the Packers beat the Titans 2-1.  The Packers are now in second place.  The Titans scored on the first play of the game and then did not do another thing all game.  The Packers just wanted it more.  We play the Pack next week in what should an epic game under the lights at Harbor Island.

We played without Pancake and El Diablo today.  We hope Matt feels better.  We will go with two practices this week.  Tues and Friday we will start 15 minutes earlier at 4:45 to 6:15pm.
